On May 12, 2011, Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW joined the Living Wage NYC Coalition, comprised of labor, community and religious organizations, as well as members of the New York City Council, to rally in favor the Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act. This bill will ensure that employers pay a Living Wage of $10 an hour plus benefits or $11.50 an hour without benefits to workers in large development projects that receive taxpayer subsidies from New York City.

RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum, religious leaders, and several members of the New York City Council, including the bill’s key sponsor Oliver Koppell spoke at the rally. A hearing was held following the rally where members of the coalition and city residents testified before the City Council in favor of a living wage.

There is an increasing number of New Yorkers who are struggling to make ends meet and the time for a living wage is NOW!
